I’ve been meaning to write a blog post for a few weeks now, but for one reason or another, I haven’t opened up my laptop. That was until I stumbled across an old quote I saved about body image, buried deep within the notes section of my battered old iPhone… and it seemed so good that I felt the need to jump on here right away and share it with you.
I also want to share a couple of other quotes that have consistently given me perspective and helped me to appreciate my body – whatever it’s weight, shape and tone.
So, let’s talk body image.
Doubtless you’ve suffered from poor body image at various times throughout your life – most of us have, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me it was something you were battling with right now. It’s miserable, and it knocks on to so many more aspects of our live than the most obvious ones. In fact, the Government Equality Office reported back in 2015 that “poor body image reduces women’s economic, political and social power. Poor body image is associated with lower confidence, lower aspirations and lower social participation. If you aim for less, less is generally what you get”.
More recently, the Guardian reported that “a majority of girls with low body esteem will skip meals and avoid seeing friends and family, participating in extra-curricular activities or seeing a doctor. The research, based on interviews with 5,165 girls aged 10 to 17 in 14 countries, also found that more than half of girls with low body esteem struggle to be assertive. The survey, carried out by Edelman Intelligence for the 2017 Dove Global Girls Beauty and Confidence Report, found that only 46% of girls globally had high body esteem, while the figure was even lower in the UK (39%). Of the countries included, only China and Japan fared worse”.
Now, I don’t want to speculate on the reasons behind poor body image in this post, or explore what some of the solutions might be. Nor is this post going to turn into a bare-all about how I’ve felt about my body at various times in my life. But I do want to share a handful of quotes that might just nudge you in the right direction of building a happier relationship with the flesh and bone you happen to live within. Who knows – perhaps one of these quotes may just serve as a little chink of light if you’re in a particularly bad place with your body image right now.
So without further preamble from me (though feel free to dive into the subject in the comment section below – I’d love to hear what you have to say on this), here are the three body image quotes I find it useful to remind myself of from time to time. Pin them, share them, set them as your wallpaper… wherever you’ll see them in the hope of prompting a bit of compassion for yourself.
“You are not wallpaper. It’s not your job to look good”. – Sara Tasker
Sara Tasker is full of pearls of wisdom, and I remind myself of this genius observation if I’m feeling down about my body from time to time.
“I see my body as an instrument, rather than an ornament.” – Alanis Morissette
I have no idea where I first came across this quote, but it pops into my head whenever I’m exercising. It always makes me appreciate what my body can do and reminds me of its most important function – to get me around.
“How to have a beach body: take your body to the beach” – the women protesting this shit.
And finally, this one makes me smile – every time!
